Fritz Scholder (b. 1937, d. 2005) is probably the most widely known and respected contemporary Indian painter of the 20th century. Having studied art in high school under Sioux painter, Oscar Howe, Scholder later participated in the Southwest Indian Art Project, and taught contemporary painting at the Institute of American Indian Arts, in Santa Fe. Many of his students established the contemporary Indian painting movement in the 1960s, including T.C. Cannon, Earl Biss, King Kuka, Sherman Chaddlesone, Bennie Buffalo, Kevin Red Star and Earl Eder. Scholder's colorist approach to Indian themes was revolutionary and has influenced successive generations of Indian painters. Several volumes of Scholder's works have been published, and his works are included in many important institutional collections, including the Smithsonian Institute (Washington, DC), the Museum of Modern Art (New York, NY) and the Institute of American Indian Arts Museum (Santa Fe, NM). |
