Pop Chalee (b. 1906, d. 1993) is considered by many to be the foremost Taos Indian painter. A student of Dorothy Dunn at the Santa Fe Indian School, she devoted herself to traditional Indian painting, becoming particularly well known for her paintings of dancers and native fauna. Her artistic career was documented in the Margaret Cesa's book "The World of Flower Blue: Pop Chalee - an Artistic Biography." Her works are included in numerous museum collections, including the Gilcrease Museum (Tulsa, OK), the Heard Museum (Phoenix, AZ), and the Millicent Rogers Museum (Taos, NM). Several of her murals are permanently displayed at the Albuquerque Airport. |
