Tonita Pena/Quah Ah (San Ildefonso)
Traditional painter.

Tonita Pena was a very important artist in the early pueblo art movement (in fact, her life's work was documented in the book: Tonita Pena, by Samuel L. Gray).   A Tewa woman of San Ildefonso descent, she was raised at Cochiti pueblo.  Her works carefully and accurately depict pueblo customs and culture.  She was instrumental in defining the "traditional style" of modern Indian painting - with the discrete use of color and fine line-work.  Her son, Joe Herrera was also an accomplished pueblo painter.   Her works are included in numerous museum collections, including the American Museum of Natural History (New York, NY) and the Southwest Museum (Los Angeles, CA).

The Gallery has a limited number of original paintings by Tonita Pena.
