Ignatius Palmer (Mescalero Apache)
Traditional painter.

Ignatius Palmer (b. 1921) was the foremost Mescalero Apache painter.  He studied art at the Santa Fe Indian School, and was devoted to the traditional “Studio” style.  He was well known for his detailed paintings of Apache crown dancers, which displayed a strong sense of color and motion.  Another common subject for Palmer was the native fauna of Apache country.  His works have been exhibited in numerous institutions, including the Woolaroc Museum (Bartlesville, OK), the Museum of New Mexico (Santa Fe, NM), and the Smithsonian Institute’s Museum of the American Indian (Washington, DC).

The Gallery has a limited number of paintings by Ignatius Palmer.
