Doc Tate Nevaquaya was an important force in preserving American Indian culture during the 20th century.  He was a master of the plains flute, and a highly accomplished traditional painter.  Competely self-taught, his works have been purchased by such noted private collections as Queen Elizabeth II, and such noted instutional collections as the Smithsonian Institute (Washington, DC), and the Philbrook Museum of Art (Tulsa, OK).  In 1986, he became the first American Indian to be awarded the National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts.  He was an Oklahoma Living Treasure and a National Living Treasure.
