Stephen Mopope was largely considered to be one of the most influental artists of the 20th century. He was an original member of the Kiowa Five, an informal art school at the University of Oklahoma from 1927-1929. These artists were critical in establishing the norms of modern Indian painting. Their work won international acclaim at the International Art Exposition in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1928, where the European critical establishment was amazed at their technical skill and vivid colors. Stephen Mopope was the most popular and prolific of the Kiowa Five artists. His works are included in numerous important institutional collections, such as the Peabody-Essex Museum (Cambridge, MA), and the Philbrook Museum (Tulsa, OK). |
