George Keahbone (b. 1916, d. 2002) was a highly respected traditional Kiowa painter, whose style and technique was developed independently of the Kiowa Five (also studying Indian painting during the 1930s). George Keahbone was a student of Dorothy Dunn at the Santa Fe Indian School. He was well known for his detailed paintings of traditional Kiowa dances, and his painting exhibited much greater technical detail than his Kiowa contemporaries at the time. His works are included in numerous museum collections, including the Philbrook (Tulsa, OK), the Joslyn Art Museum (Omaha, NE), and the Museum of New Mexico (Santa Fe, NM). |
