Kai Sa was one of the first progressive traditional painters. He began his art studies under Dorothy Dunn at the Santa Fe Indian School in the traditional flat style; however, he was one of the first Indian artists to widely incorporate conventional, realist shading techniques to his work. His work changed dramatically after an automobile accident in 1959. Works after the accident rarely demonstrated the technical skill as his earlier works. His paintings are included in such noted museum collections as the Smithsonian Institute (Washington, DC), and the Philbrook Museum of Art (Tulsa, OK). |
