Allan Houser (b. 1914, d. 1994) is widely considered to be among the most influential and important figures in American Indian art history. He studied painting under Dorothy Dunn at the Santa Fe Indian School in the 1930s. Although he was initially dedicated to traditional, flat-style of painting, his works became increasingly progressive after leaving the Studio. He later taught at the Institute of American Indian Arts, where his influence on the contemporary Indian art movement was profound. He received numerous awards and honors over his career, including the Presidental Medal of the Arts (from President George Bush in 1992). His works are widely published and included in museum collections worldwide, including the Philbrook Museum (Tulsa, OK), the Heard Museum (Phoenix, AZ) and the Smithsonian Institute (Washington, DC). |
