Joan Hill is the most awarded artist in American Indian art history. Her works have won more than 270 awards in competition, including 14 grand awards. She has also earned several other distinctions, including the Oscar d’Italia (Academie Italia, Cremona, Italy), and was named one of the Smithsonian Institute’s People of the Century. She is known for her traditional flat style, as well as contemporary colorism and transitional painting, which incorporates both traditional figures and contemporary colors. Her works are included in such noted collections as the Heard Museum (Phoenix, AZ), and the Gilcrease Museum (Tulsa, OK). |
