Valjean Hessing (Choctaw)
Traditional and contemporary painter.

Valjean Hessing has long been considered one of the most important traditional painters.  Her unique style of progressive traditionalism incorporates the rigid line work of the old school, but incorporates creative stylization based largely upon basic geometric forms.  This style has earned international recognition as well as numerous awards (more than 95).  It has also made her one of the most published American Indian artists today.  She has been honored as a "Master Artist" by the Five Civilized Tribes Museum (Muskogee, OK).  His works are included in such noted museum collections as the Heard Museum (Phoenix, AZ), and the Philbrook Museum of Art (Tulsa, OK).

The Gallery has a very limited number of original paintings by Valjean Hessing.
