Archie Blackowl is generally considered to be one of the more important Oklahoma traditional painters. His works were noted for capturing traditional Southerns Plains life and culture with amazing technical control. Blackowl was best known for his detailed paintings of Southern Plains dancers, as well as striking works on black board (a very unforgiving approach to painting). His devotion to the exacting traditional style earned him the honor of "Living Legend" by Ralph Oliver in 1990. His works are included in such noted museum collections as the Gilcrease Museum (Tulsa, OK), and the Millicent Rogers Museum (Taos, NM). |
