About Gary Hummingbird

Gary Hummingbird is a Cherokee artist,
currently residing in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
He is one of the foremost progressive
traditional painters in the Indian art
world today - devoted to the traditional,
two-dimensional, flat style of painting
that was popularlized by the Kiowa Five
and artists of The Studio.  His works are
notably different from traditional masters,
though.  His works incorporate a unique
creative flair.  Gary's work has been
influenced by friends who also pushed
traditional Indian painting beyond its
boundaries, specifically, Valjean Hessing,
Doc Tate Nevaquaya and Jane Mauldin (each
of whom owned Gary's original work).

He has won numerous awards for his work,
including first place in painting at the
Five Civilized Tribes Museum (Muskogee,
OK).  He is the only artist to have won
the Cecil Dick Master of Heritage Award
from the Five Civilized Tribes Museum for
five years consecutively. This annual
award recognizes outstanding traditional
style painting, done in the tradition of
Cherokee painter, Cecil Dick.  His works
have been displayed in the Five Civilized
Tribes Museum (Muskogee, OK), the Cherokee
National Museum (Tahlequah, OK), and the
Bath House Cultural (Dallas, TX).  His
paintings are included in many private
collections worldwide.  He was profiled
in Susan Power's book "Art of the Cherokee
- Prehistory to the Present."

Gary Hummingbird is also represented by
the New Milleneum Fine Art Gallery, and
the Art Exchange Gallery in Santa Fe, New
Mexico.
